Waiheke Island
After a late night flight into Auckland and a dash the next morning to the ferry to make the most of it, we spent day one of our trip (and my birthday!) in Waiheke Island. This small and very pretty island is a short 40 min ferry from Auckland. The water is beautiful and bright, from deep blue to bright turquoise, and the coast is dotted with small boats. The main attraction on the island itself is the many wineries there are.
After arriving on the island, we took a taxi to our accomodation, a funky guesthouse in the Ostend area called x. We dropped off our bags and went back to the main town where we rented an electric scooter and used it to explore the island during the day, visiting beaches and taking in the sights and having a birthday lunch with local wine on the way. We even went for a dip, it was too pretty not to but spoiler alert, the water was co-old!
After swimming we went back to our guesthouse and prettied up before returning the scooter and taking a taxi to Mudbrick Winery for celebratory birthday drinks and sunset views. It was the best way I can think of spending my birthday, we'll have to think of something great to top it next year!
